Yamaha student flutes are great instruments, often getting a better sound than higher level flutes made by their competitors. If I were to recommend a beginner flute model, a Yamaha 200 series flute would be it.
This is a great opportunity to get a beginner and "step-up" flute all in one! Hole plugs are available to fill the holes for the beginner student who is not yet accustomed to playing an open hole instrument. With plugs, this flute will be identical to a closed hole flute. Once ready to step-up to open hole, the player can simply pop the hole plugs out.
I would recommend this flute as an upgrade from a student level Gemeinhardt, Artley, Bundy, Selmer, Blessing, or other lesser brand, as a first instrument following a rental flute, or for an ambitious beginner who wants the opportunity to learn on an open hole flute from the get-go. This would also be a great flute for an adult learner or doubler.
